What We Believe
We are a Christian Church in Boulder County.
At the heart of everything we believe is a person: Jesus Christ. We’re a Spirit-filled, non-denominational church standing in the historic stream of orthodox Christian faith — the same faith confessed by the global Church for two thousand years.
We hold these convictions with confidence, and we hold them with humility. You don’t have to believe all of this to belong here or to explore faith with us. Wherever you’re starting from, you’re welcome to come, ask honest questions, and see for yourself.
The Nicene Creed
Along with our statement of faith below, we hold to the historic confession of the Nicene Creed — a summary of Christian belief written in the 4th century and shared by Christians across the world ever since.
“We believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
begotten from the Father before all ages,
God from God,
Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made;
of the same essence as the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven;
he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,
and was made human.
He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered and was buried.
The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again with glory
to judge the living and the dead.
His kingdom will never end.
And we believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life.
He proceeds from the Father and the Son,
and with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified.
He spoke through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.
We affirm one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look forward to the resurrection of the dead,
and to life in the world to come. Amen.”
Statement of Faith
More specifically, here is what we believe and teach.
One God, Three Persons
There is only one true God who is the eternal King, Creator and Redeemer of all that is. He is perfectly holy, just, loving and truthful. He has revealed Himself to be eternally self- existent – one being in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
Jesus Christ
The Lord Jesus Christ, the one and only Son of God, was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin, Mary, and is God’s Anointed One, empowered by the Holy Spirit to inaugurate God’s Kingdom on earth. He was crucified for our sins, died, was buried, resurrected and ascended into heaven, and is now alive today, in the presence of God the Father and in His people. He is “true God” and “true man.”
Holy Spirit
In the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live holy and minister super-naturally. The baptism of the Holy Spirit according to Acts 1:4-8 and 2:4 is poured out on believers that they might have power to be witnesses.
Salvation & Grace
We are saved by God’s grace, through faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Anyone can be restored to fellowship with God through repenting, believing and receiving Jesus as their Savior and Lord. The Holy Spirit convicts, regenerates, justifies, and adopts us as we enter the Kingdom of God as His sons and daughters.
Humanity
Humankind was created in the image of God to know and enjoy Him, yet we willfully rejected the Lordship and glory of God for which we were intended. Because of this, sickness, death and judgment entered the world and now creation experiences the effects and consequences of sin.
The Church
The Church consists of all who put their faith in Jesus Christ. He gave His church the ordinances of Baptism and Communion. The Church exists to carry on the ministry of Jesus Christ and further advance His kingdom by undoing the works of the enemy, preaching and living the good news of God’s love, discipling the nations, baptizing and teaching them to love and obey God.
The Bible
The Bible is the inspired and only infallible and authoritative Word of God.
The Cross
The victorious redemptive work of Christ on the cross provides freedom from the power of the enemy – sin, lies, sickness and torment.
Return of Christ
We believe in the ever-increasing government of God and in the blessed hope: the glorious, visible return of our Lord Jesus Christ for His church. There will be a resurrection of the saved and the lost — one to everlasting life, the other to everlasting death.
Other Distinctives
Non-denominational
The Lookout is not affiliated with a larger Christian denomination. We are relationally connected to kingdom leaders outside of our local church for the sake of prayer, discernment, and connection.
Charismatic
We depend on the power and infilling of the Holy Spirit. We embrace the gifts and ministry of the Spirit to equip the church for fruitful missional engagement. We seek to be a people of God’s manifest presence resulting in works of awe-inspiring love.
Contemplative
We cling to the necessity of deep inner, spiritual formation and discipleship. We practice a slow-down spirituality in a world at war for our time and attention. We seek to recover ancient practices of sabbath, silence, solitude, and contemplative prayer to grow in Christlikness.
